The South Platte River–specifically, the upper reach of Segment 15—is designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as impaired. This 26-mile segment extends north from Denver through Adams County.and contains remnants from sand and gravel mining. For at least 183 days annually in eight out of the last ten years more than 50% of its flow consists of treated wastewater.
Knowing that the South Platte River can only become healthy through community awareness and care, the South Platte River Advisory Youth Council was formed in metro Denver with broad support from community leaders and nonprofits. Nicknamed “SPRAY", the Council provides leadership and learning opportunities for Denver’s youth who want a swimmable, fishable river in their community.
While most STEM learning opportunities are for youth and offered in school settings, SPRAY programming focuses on a multi-generational learning approach, reinforcing family structure while recognizing cultural identity. The Council also developed Our River, Our Voices, Our Future, a guide written by youth for youth who want to make a difference in their community.
Forever Our Rivers partnered with Lincoln Hills Cares, a Black founded and led nonprofit that reconnects historically marginalized people to the outdoors and nature, serving over 103,000 youth in partnership with over 75 organizations. Community involvement is particularly important in this cleanup, as nonpoint sources are the leading cause of water pollution.
The broad area that drains into this segment of the river, including parts of Denver, Aurora, Commerce City and Adams County, is believed to be the leading source of the bacteria E. coli. It is especially difficult to control because the pollutants don’t come from a single identifiable point. Animal feces, lawn chemicals, grease and oils all contribute to this degraded river system.
